  • Helping reduce crime through a balanced approach of punishment, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation
  • Protecting victims and promoting fairness & justice
  • Instituting a problem-solving approach to tackle complex issues such as mental illness and substance abuse

Public Safety

Public Safety

  • Targeting violent crime, fraud, and serial recidivism, which pose the greatest threat to the safety of our community
  • Being tough on criminals who seek to harm our neighbors, especially children and other vulnerable citizens
  • Utilizing smart and innovative reforms to hold low-level offenders accountable while steering them away from the downward spiral of the system

Protecting Victims

Protecting Victims

  • Protecting victims is an important goal, and not just a means to a prosecutorial end
  • Supported the Victims Rights Amendment to ensure that victims’ safety, privacy, and input is considered at every step of the process
  • Overhauling Victim Assistance Program to be more responsive to victims’ needs

Juvenile Justice

Juvenile Justice

  • Utilizing civil citations to hold kids accountable for youthful mistakes while avoiding the arrest and conviction that hangs over them forever
  • Breaking the school-to-prison pipeline so that ordinary disciplinary problems are handled within the school rather than the criminal justice system
  • Supporting proven prevention programs that keep kids in school, out of trouble, and away from the criminal justice system

Fairness

Fairness

  • Ensuring the fair and impartial application of the law for every citizen
  • Established Conviction Review Unit to identify and remedy wrongful convictions
  • Supported the Voting Rights Restoration amendment to help ex-offenders who completed their sentence reclaim their right to vote

Transparency

Transparency

  • Holding regular community forums to engage directly with constituents
  • Participating in national research project with the MacArthur Foundation to develop better ways to evaluate prosecutorial performance
  • Partnering with the USF Department of Criminology to analyze and remedy disparities in juvenile prosecutions

Treatment Courts

Treatment Courts

  • Helped launch adult and juvenile mental health courts, both firsts for Hillsborough County
  • Expanding use and effectiveness of drug courts that emphasize treatment over punishment
  • Increasing Veterans Treatment Court that gives second chances to those who have served in uniform

Community Engagement

Community Engagement

  • Proactively engaging the community to build trust and seek input on public safety issues
  • Founded the State Attorney’s Community Council to give residents a voice in what happens in our criminal justice system
  • Developing partnerships outside the courthouse to improve public safety

Stop Criminalizing Poverty

Stop Criminalizing Poverty

  • Stopping the prosecution of citizens who are in the system because of a failure to pay civil fines and fees
  • Helping people whose driver's licenses were suspended for financial reasons regain their license rather than blindly prosecuting them
  • Held expungement clinic for citizens who could not afford having their record sealed or expunged
